Not Digboi or Bombay High—underground crude oil production has now begun in our beloved Ashoknagar. The process of transporting the crude oil to Haldia Petrochemicals for refining has also started.
Ashoknagar, the only oil-producing centre in West Bengal, has finally begun its journey after overcoming various government-related complexities. The journey commenced on 28 August 2026 in the presence of the Honourable MLA and senior ONGC officials.

The officials repeatedly highlighted how the entire ONGC team brought this initiative to its successful conclusion through tireless effort and dedication.

They also spoke about how the dedicated efforts of MLA Shri Sumay Hira and Honourable Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari, along with the wholehearted cooperation of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, helped accelerate the process.
Ashoknagar was the dream city of former Chief Minister Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. The city, also known as a refugee settlement and a wartime airfield, has now added another feather to its crown—‘Oil City Ashoknagar’.
This oil production centre in the greater Ganga basin will further improve tourism in Ashoknagar and North 24 Parganas. The high-quality oil produced here will also enrich the Indian oil market.
In addition, ONGC’s contribution to social welfare is expected to increase and play an important role in the overall development of Ashoknagar and the surrounding areas.
