বেশিরভাগ পর্যটক এবং আধ্যাত্মবাদে আগ্রহীদের জন্য বারাণসী একটি স্বপ্নের গন্তব্য। সারা বিশ্ব থেকে আধ্যাত্মিক শান্তির সন্ধানে, পবিত্র গঙ্গা নদীর তীরে ধ্যান করার জন্য বহু মানুষ এখানে আসেন।মন্দিরের শহর হিসাবে পরিচিত এই শহরে বেশ কয়েকটি মন্দির দর্শন করেন। দেব- দীপাবলির সময়ে মনে হয়, আলোর শহর হিসেবে পরিচিত বারাণসী কেবলমাত্র মন্দিরের নয়, প্রকৃত অর্থে দেবতাদের আবাস। দেব-দীপাবলির অনুষ্ঠান শুরু হয় ভগবান গণেশের উদ্দেশ্যে প্রার্থনা করে বা গণেশ বন্দনা করে ও ফুল দিয়ে। এরপর ২১ জন ব্রাহ্মণ এবং ৪১ জন তরুণী পটভূমিতে বৈদিক মন্ত্র উচ্চারণ করে দীপদান নামে পরিচিত মাটির প্রদীপ বা দিয়া নিবেদন করেন। কার্তিক স্নান নামে পরিচিত এই শুভ দিনে অগণিত ভক্ত গঙ্গা নদীতে ডুব দেন। এই আচারটি একজন ব্যক্তিকে তার পাপ থেকে মুক্তি দেয় বলে বিশ্বাস করা হয়। অনেক পরিবার অখন্ড রামায়ণ পাঠের ব্যবস্থা করেন ও এরপর ভোজের আয়োজন করেন। মানুষকে অন্নদান করেন।
ধর্মীয় রীতিনীতির পাশাপাশি ঘাটে শহীদদেরও স্মরণ করা হয়। এটি গঙ্গা মাতার কাছে প্রার্থনা এবং তাকে আরতি দেওয়ার মাধ্যমে করা হয়। গঙ্গা সেবা নিধি দ্বারা সংগঠিত হয় এই শহীদ স্মরণ। দশশ্বমেধ ঘাটে অমর জওয়ান জ্যোতিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করা হয় এবং পাশাপাশি রাজেন্দ্র প্রসাদ ঘাটে পুলিশ কর্মকর্তারা এবং তিনটি সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর সদস্যরাও পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন। এই অনুষ্ঠান উপলক্ষে দেশাত্মবোধক গানও গাওয়া হয়।
বারাণসীতে দেব-দীপাবলির সন্ধ্যায় একটি নৌকায় উঠুন এবং যতদূর চোখ যাবে আলোয় সজ্জিত ঘাটগুলির সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করুন। প্রসঙ্গত, গঙ্গা নদীর গতিপথের সঙ্গে সঙ্গতি রেখে একটি ধনুকের আকারে তৈরি হয় বারাণসী শহর। বারাণসীতে দেব-দীপাবলি সেই ধনুক দেখার উপযুক্ত সময়। এইসময় নদীর ওপারে যান। লণ্ঠনের আলোর মালায় সেজে ওঠা বারাণসীর ৮৪টি গঙ্গা ঘাটের সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করুন। বারাণসীতে দেব-দীপাবলির অভিজ্ঞতা চিরস্মরণীয় হয়ে থাকবে।
